What is SSL?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. SSL is the standard certificate for security purposes to establish an encrypted link for your website. This link protects your website data passed between the web server and browser. SSL is an industry-standard and used by millions of websites. The use of SSL is to encrypt the website data transfer form a web browser to the webserver. The SSL is mostly necessary to encrypt the sensitive data for your website customers. Sensitive data like CCV, password, card number, etc.

SSL mostly required for e-Commerce websites i.e, online stores. Because e-Commerce customers provide sensitive data like card number, CCV, password, etc. for the online transaction or online payment. And, if SSL is installed on the website then these sensitive data are encrypted before transferring from the local web browser to the webserver.

SSL provides HTTPS protocol to your website at the place of the HTTP protocol. For example, if you open a website and this website does not have SSL installed then it's URL is like http://www.bloglearner.tk and also in the browser, it shows not secured popup message. But, if the SSL is installed already on the website then the website URL is like https://www.bloglearner.tk and it does give the popup message as secured.

If you have a website and you want to install SSL on your website it is very important to have an SSL certificate. If you decide to install the SSL on your website, there are many service provider who provides your SSL certificate, make a purchase. Some best SSL certificate providers are ssl.com, GlobeHost.com, and you find many more vendors. You only have to research about this on Google.

When you make a purchase for an SSL certificate on your web server, you have to fill much information about your website and your company. When you fill all the information and follow all the steps your web server provides you two cryptographic keys in which one is a Private key and the other is Public key. The Public key is used at the time of the installation of the SSL certificate.
